Yale defenseman Joe Callahan has signed a multi-year deal with the NHL’s Phoenix Coyotes, forgoing his final year of eligibility.
Callahan, 21, from Brockton, Mass., played 31 games this season, leading Bulldogs defensemen in goals (6), assists (14), points (20) and penalty minutes (38).
The 6-foot-3, 219-pound junior had 2-11–13 and 38 PIM in 32 games for Yale last season. In 2001-02, he collected 3-8–11 and 20 PIM in 31 games. The Coyotes selected Callahan in the 3rd round (70th overall) of the 2002 Entry Draft.
Callahan played his first pro game Friday for Springfield of the American Hockey League, Phoenix’s top affiliate, and had no points.
