After the dust settles…Nothing was solved.
So of course with how much I hyped the Manhattanville/Elmira series it would end with a split. For the most part, nothing was gained and nothing was lost by either team as they each claimed a one goal win over the other. Elmira’s Tori Charron has scored six of the Soaring Eagles’ last nine goals over their last four games. Manhattanville is probably pleased with the split considering the Valiants were missing Holly Nonis and Sonia Occhionero.
After picking up 12 wins last seaosn, St. Mary’s is off to another strong start this year with a 4-1-1 record through six games. The Cardinals look to be one of the chief challengers to try and unseat Gustavus Adolphus from the top seat in the MIAC.
Defense wins championships
You want impressive defensive numbers? Look no further then three of the top teams in the country right now. Through six games, RIT has given up just four goals, while scoring 33. The Tigers are looking like a juggernaut early with a rookie stud in Laura Chamberlain finally solidifying the spot in between the pipes for Scott McDonald’s club.
Plattsburgh and Gustavus Adolphus have each given up one goal so far this season. The Cardinals have played three games and are coming off a sweep at Neumann. Gustavus Adolphus, who is always known for its strong puck possession game have surrendered one goal as well through four games.
Player of the Week: Tenecia Hiller, RIT
Tenecia, a sophomore forward from Brampton, Ont., scored a natural hat trick as well as the game-winning goal in Saturday’s 5-2 win at utica. Hiller added a power play tally and an assist to lead the Tigers’ offense. She added an assist in Sunday’s 4-1 win. Hiller has six goals and five assists on the season for 11 points, which ranks second on the team.
Goalie of the Week: Francesca Palazzo, Nichols
Francesca, a freshman from Bernardston, Mass., made 68 saves to lead Nichols to a 3-2 upset win over Sacred Heart on Saturday. Palazzo is 1-2 on the season with a .934 save percentage.
Rookies of the Week: Haley Coolsaet, St. Mary’s and Jenn Paul, Wis.- Superior
Haley, a freshman forward from Grosse Island, Mich., scored a hat trick to lead St. Mary’s to a 5-2 win over Concordia-Moorhead. Coolsaet scored the final three goals for the Cardinals and picked up the game-winning goal. She has six goals and one assist on the season for seven points.
Jenn, a freshman forward from Paynesville, Minn., scored two goals and added three assists to help lead the Yellowjackets to a sweep of Finlandia over the weekend. Paul leads Superior with five goals and four assists so far this season.
