Gustav Nyquist, the Detroit Red Wings’ fourth-round draft pick in 2008 and Maine’s leading scorer each of the past three seasons, has signed a two-year entry-level contract with the NHL club and will not be back with the Black Bears for his senior season.
Nyquist, a 21-year-old forward, scored 50 goals with 94 assists in 113 games at Maine and is again a Hobey Baker Award finalist this year after being a runner-up last season.
Last year as a sophomore, Nyquist led the nation in scoring with 19 goals and 42 assists.
Nyquist, who was Maine’s top scorer this year with 18 goals and 33 assists, will report to the Red Wings’ American Hockey League affiliate in Grand Rapids, Mich.
