Freshman Tommy Traversa blew Hobart’s game open in the third period on Friday scoring a natural hat trick to break a 2-2 tie. Traversa tallied his first two goals in a 2:27 span early in the period and then threw in an empty netter with 36 seconds remaining to seal the 5-2 victory.
Hobart finished off the weekend beating Brockport 4-2. The Statesmen scored a pair of power play goals to build a 3-0 midway through the third period and then had to withstand a Brockport charge to hold on to the victory.
Neumann finished off its busy week by beating Brockport 3-2 on Friday. Four of the five goals during the game were scored on the power play, two by each team. Like Hobart on Saturday, Neumann had to withstand a comeback bid by Brockport late for the win.
The Knights played four games in eight days from December 30 to January 6th, three of those games on the road. Neumann swept all four games to get the second half of the season off to a rolling start.
“It takes a little bit of the emphasis off of practice which the guys like,” said Neumann coach Dominik Dawes. “It brings a bit of the pro mentality. We needed to keep focused on the task at hand.”
Manhattanville played a tough midweek contest against Amherst, holding on for a 3-3 tie after building a 3-1 lead by the midway point of the game.
The Valiants had no such trouble on Saturday as they blasted Cortland 8-0. Thirteen different players tallied at least a point for Manhattanville and Brett Skalski notched the only multi goal night with a pair. Pierre-Olivier Lemieux recorded his first shutout of the season, eighth of his career, which extends his school record.
Elmira’s struggles continued through the weekend. Despite outshooting Fitchburg State 48-16, the Soaring Eagles could only manage a 1-1 tie against the Falcons on Friday.
Elmira’s lethargic offense finally exploded in the second period Saturday against Morrisville. Kevin Willer opened up with a pair of goals, followed by tallied by Brendan Sanders and Christian Morrisette. That was enough to give Elmira the 4-1win, the team’s first victory since December 3rd.
Utica easily coasted past Cortland and Curry over the weekend by comfortable 5-2 and 7-3 scores. Jon Gaffney led the way in points with two goals and four assists but Chris Santiago wasn’t far behind with three goals and a helper as well.
