Geneseo finally gets a shutout
Perhaps the Mayans are correct. Maybe the end of the world is coming this year.
After eight years, two months, six days, and 226 games, Geneseo finally got a shutout.
It wasn’t a particularly hard one, as Andy Rubeniuk only had to stop 12 Franklin Pierce shots, but the Ice Knights will take it any way they can to end one of the most bizarre streaks in college hockey. Interestingly, nobody scored any goals in the third period, as Geneseo’s only focus was finally to get that elusive shutout once and for all. Franklin Pierce only got three shots in the final period.
The Ice Knights had the luxury to concentrate on the shutout, as they scored eight times in the first two periods, led by David Arduin’s two goals within 17 seconds, capping off a three-goal outburst in 50 seconds to make it 3-0 after one. Arduin then completed the natural hat trick 2:13 into the second.
The day before, Geneseo had a much tougher time beating the Ravens, finally prevailing, 5-4. Geneseo fell behind 2-1, 3-2, and 4-3, before scoring two late game goals to win. Corbin Rosmarin got the game-winner with 2:02 left in the third, and Carson Schell scored twice.
Plattsburgh sweeps again
The Cardinals once again pulled off a home sweep over nonconference opponents. First, they repeated their win over Castleton by one goal, this time 3-2. After a scoreless first period, Matty MacLeod gave them the lead.
After the Spartans tied it up, Alex Jensen and Alex Brenton scored third period goals to keep Plattsburgh in front for good. Mathieu Cadieux made 24 saves.
The next night, Plattsburgh had to play catch up before pulling away for a 6-3 win over Skidmore. The Cardinals fell behind 2-0 and 3-2 before scoring four unanswered third period goals, the first two by Kyle Kudroch and the last two within 42 seconds. Josh Leis started the game, but was replaced by Cadieux.
Other highlights
– Buffalo State had a strong weekend, first tying St. Anselm, 1-1, with an early goal by Trevor McKinney, and then giving up the tying goal with the extra attacker for the Hawks. Then, the Bengals beat New England College, 4-3, in overtime on a goal by Jim Durham 37 seconds into the extra period. Buffalo State had a 3-1 lead they couldn’t hold onto.
– For the third game in a row, Potsdam ended regulation play tied 4-4. This time however, there was a winner, as the Bears defeated Skidmore on a goal by Bill Tsekos at 4:08. Potsdam had 2-0 and 3-1 leads, only to fall behind 4-3 before Brett Waters tied it up with 3:10 left in regulation.
– Brockport once again played an ECAC West opponent tough, despite losing to Neumann, 3-2. Nick Panepinto scored late in the second to cut Neumann’s lead to 2-1. Troy Polino scored in the last minute of the third to cut the lead to 3-2, but it was too little, too late.
