The Hockey East slate of game has barely begun and already I sit here with my jaw dropped.
The team that made the jaw hit the floor, of course, is Northeastern. The Huskies pulled a minor upset midweek, knocking off newly-ranked Merrimack. But Saturday was the game-changer.
NU’s upset of No. 1 Boston College leads off my list of things I learned this week.
1. Huskies, Huskies, Huskies: Seriously, how can I not lead with this team. Northeastern used two very quick starts out of the gate to beat Merrimack and BC. But the wins aside, we saw two very impressive things about this team. First, Kevin Roy is the real deal. He was a highly-touted recruit that chose Northeastern over Brown and in two games already has two clutch goals. Second, Chris Rawlings may be the goaltender to watch in Hocket East this season. Just “Don’t Stop Believin'” Huskies fans.
2. Don’t mess with the “Hoff”: Remember the name Brody Hoffman, Hockey East fans. The Vermont goaltender stonewalled a very good Massachusetts-Lowell offense on Friday night, earning a 1-1 tie on the road for the Catamounts. Making 38 saves, Hoffman certainly impressed this guy and I am sure this could be just the start.
3. Hats off in New Hampshire: Earning 500 wins is no small feat. Doing so at the same school is even more impressive. Thus I must tip my cap to legendary UNH head coach Dick Umile. Not only did his Wildcats snag victory 500 on Friday, they added #501 on Saturday for the two-game sweep of St. Cloud. Super start to what most hope will be a great season in Durham.
