As teams come back from the Holiday break, some still get to relax a bit more before hitting the ice to resume action. For those programs that got back into play, most games right now are tournaments that showcase some unique matchups that one may not see over the course of the season.
Even though the action is still a tad bit light this week, let’s take a look at the action going around D-III.
Lord Jeffs superior to Birds
The NESCAC’s Amherst Lord Jeffs won the Cardinal Classic this past week, defeating the Elmira Golden Eagles (ECAC-W) and Plattsburgh Cardinals (SUNYAC).
Amherst, which is now on a three-game winning streak, beat Elmira in game one — convincingly — 5-1. In the championship game, the Lord Jeffs faced No.8 Plattsburgh, and used a three-goal second period to overthrow the Cardinals, 3-2.
Amherst is now 7-3-1 on the year, and has a stretch of four home games to open up 2013.
Almost identical split
The Adrian Bulldogs and Wisconsin-Stevens Point Pointers battled to a spilt this past weekend in Adrian, Mich.
Game one saw a brief comeback from the Bulldogs in the third period, who put up four goals. However, the Pointers held off the late surge and secured the 7-4 victory.
The Pointers benefited from six players with two or more points, including three-point nights from Alex Kromm and Garrett Ladd.
Game two was pretty close to game one in terms of the score; however, it was the Bulldogs on the victorious side, defeating the Pointers, 6-4.
Josh Ranalli led the way offensively with two goals and two assists, while Josh Cousineau and Zach Graham each had three points.
More tournament play — and games too
In Middlebury, Vt. and Oswego, N.Y., two more tournaments conclude today as the Middlebury Classic and Pathfinder Bank Oswego Tournament find champions.
Oswego State takes on Lawerence for the right to win the Pathfinder Bank tourney, while Babson takes on Manhattenville in the Middlebury Classic championship.
Meanwhile, Hamilton hosts to Curry and Becker travels to Hartford, Conn., to take on Trinity.
