PHILADELPHIA — North Dakota’s Nick Mattson on Wednesday was named the winner of the NCAA’s Elite 89 award for academic and athletic achievement.
The award honors a player who has the highest academic standing among those who reach the championship level in their sport.
Mattson, a junior entrepreneurship major, has a 3.966 cumulative grade point average.
He is tied for the North Dakota scoring lead among defensemen with 23 points in 39 games.
The award is presented to a student-athlete at the finals site of each of the 89 NCAA championships.
