Geneseo sophomore Jay Stephanik has been hospitalized as a result of a traumatic head injury, according to a report in the Genesee Sun.
It’s not known what caused the injury, but a GoFundMe.com page states that Stephanik was found to have suffered a fracture to the back of his skull and his frontal lobe was bleeding.
According to Strong Memorial Hospital, Stephanik is currently in the Intensive Care Unit in “guarded condition.”
“[Jay] has suffered from periodic seizures, and his speech has been gravely affected,” reads the GoFundMe page. “The cause of Jay’s injuries are not entirely known.”
As recent as Tuesday afternoon, the page had raised $11,185 towards its goal of $25,000.
The GoFundMe page also states that as of Nov. 1, Stephanik has started walking with little assistance and his family is hopeful that he will fully recover.
In the 2014-15 season, Stephanik played in 16 games with Geneseo, scoring a goal and adding five assists.
UPDATE (Nov. 3): The Democrat and Chronicle reports that a skateboard injury was the cause of Staphanik’s injuries.
