Can any team stop Plattsburgh?
The top-ranked, undefeated, untied Cardinals (22-0-0) swept Cortland over the weekend, winning 7-1 Saturday and 3-1 Sunday. Saturday, Courtney Moriarty scored twice with an assist and Camille Leonard made just 10 saves. Leonard had to make 13 stops Sunday to move to 20-0-0 and Moriarty and Bridget Balisy each posted a goal and an assist.
No. 2 Adrian lucked out against St. Scholastica, going to overtime on two straight games, tying 2-2 Friday and then winning 3-2 Saturday on Michelle Jones’ winner with 30 seconds left in OT. In the opener, Nikki Logergren and Sierra Hanowski scored consecutive goals in the third for St. Scholastica to force extra time. Lindsey Hartfiel was unbelievable for St. Scholastica in stopping 56 shots.
Third-ranked Elmira swept a home-and-home with Buffalo State, blanking the Bengals 5-0 Saturday at home after taking a 3-1 win in Buffalo on Friday. Five different players scored in the shutout and Kelcey Crawford made 18 saves in net. The opener saw Crawford stop 21 shots to nab the victory.
Lake Forest, the No. 4 team in the country, downed St. Norbert 6-3 Friday before settling for a 2-2 tie on Saturday. Michelle Greeneway scored twice Friday, Amy Buddle added a goal and two assists and Amanda Brunges tallied three helpers for Lake Forest as Allie Carter finished with 10 saves. Kelli Sorge’s first goal of the year for St. Norbert at 12:20 of the third period stood as the tying goal Saturday. Brianna Kelly made 26 saves for the Green Knights.
After beating St. Anselm 3-2 last Wednesday, No. 5 Amherst walloped Manhattanville 9-1 on Saturday. Erin Martin scored three, Katie Savage two, and Alex Toupal and Jocelyn Hunyadi both registered a goal and two assists. Amherst goalie Bailey Plaman stopped 11 shots.
No. 6 Middlebury swept Wesleyan at home with a 4-2 win Friday and a 5-0 win Saturday as Kiana Verplancke pitched an 18-save shutout and Maddie Winslow went for two goals and two assists. Friday, Jessica Young figured in on all four goals with two goals and a pair of helpers to back Marisa Dreher’s dozen saves.
No. 7 Wisconsin-River Falls played just once, a 2-1 win at Wisconsin-Superior on Saturday. Chloe Kinsel popped a goal and added an assist for the Falcons, while Angie Hall made 19 saves in the win. Sky Brown stopped 40 for Superior in the hard-luck defeat.
St. Thomas, which fell four spots to No. 8 last week, snapped its three-game losing skid with a 4-1 win against Concordia (Minn.) on Friday, but then suffered a 1-0 OT loss Saturday on Tori Davis’ winner and Andrea Klug’s 40 saves. Friday, four different players scored for the Tommies and Mackenzie Torpy made 22 saves.
Ninth-ranked Norwich beat Middlebury 3-2 on Tuesday and then extended its win streak to six games with a 3-1 win at Franklin Pierce on Friday. Madison Gallagher recorded a goal and an assist and Erin Joyce and Bryn Labbe scored in the win Friday as Celeste Robert made 23 saves in relief of Laurie King to pick up the ‘W.’
No. 10 Castleton went .500 on the weekend, beating St. Michael’s 6-3 Friday before falling 3-2 to Plymouth State Saturday. In the Spartans’ win Friday, Rachael Brazil earned her first win of the season with a 35-save effort. Saturday, Kelsey Lynch’s goal at 11:39 of the third period snapped a tie and PSU held on the rest of the way. Emelie Lindqvist turned aside 41 shots for the win between the pipes.
All that said, look for minor movement in Monday’s rankings — maybe flip flop St. Thomas and Norwich?
