Wisconsin senior Aidan Cavallini was named the winner of the 2017 Derek Hines Unsung Hero Award on Friday.
The award honors the memory of Hines, a former Army West Point player who was killed in action in Afghanistan in 2005. It’s awarded to a player “who displays exemplary sportsmanship, is supremely competitive, intelligent and extraordinarily conditioned with an unmatched work ethic.”
A Barrington, Ill., native, Cavallini entered his senior season at Wisconsin with no collegiate goals. He scored six in his final year, starting with a Dec. 9 victory at Michigan.
A finance major and a Big Ten All-Academic honoree, Cavallini also serves the community with volunteer activities.
The other finalists were Geoff Fortman of Canisius, Davis Jones of Alaska, Jared Kolquist of Merrimack, Brenden Kotyk of Minnesota Duluth and Devin Tringale of Harvard.
