Iona shut out Connecticut, 6-0, in a MAAC game Saturday evening. UConn, having dropped four of five games, falls to 5-8-2 overall (5-5-1 MAAC), while Iona improves to 9-6-2 (8-3-2 MAAC).
The Gaels opened the first period with three unanswered goals. Ryan Carter and Ryan Manitowich nailed the first two goals past UConn keeper Artie Imbriano within the first 10 minutes of play.
After a Connecticut goalie change to Jason Carey, Iona’s Jean Paul Chaput scored on a power-play opportunity.
UConn held Iona to only one goal in the second stanza on another shot by Manitowich, giving the Gaels the 4-0 lead. Tim Krueckl and Stephen Frappier netted Iona’s final tallies in the third period.
Mike Fraser earned the win in net by fighting off 24 UConn shots, while Imbriano took the Husky loss, making only three saves to Carey’s 22 stops in net.
