Senior wing Jim Lorentz scored two goals to lead St. Lawrence to a 6-1 win over Lake Superior State on Friday night.
The Saints won their second straight and improved to 4-11-1 on the season. The Lakers lost their 13th straight and are now 3-14-0. The two teams will play the second game of a two-game series Saturday night.
The Saints jumped out to the early lead just 3:17 into the game as sophomore Josh Anderson one-timed a shot past Laker goalie Matt Violin from the short slot.
The Saints then cashed in twice on a five-minute major power play to take a 3-0 lead after one period. Lorentz scored the first of the two power-play goals, his fourth of the season, from in tight at 6:18, and senior captain Blair Clarance redirected a shot from the point by Rich Peverley past Violin just 32 seconds later.
While the Saints dominated the second period and had a 19-12 edge in shots on goal, the lone goal of the period came with just 2.5 seconds to play when freshman T.J. Trevelyan stole the puck in the neutral zone and fired a rising shot past Violin to make it 4-0 after two periods.
St. Lawrence freshman John Zeiler scored his second of the season on a power play 5:44 into the third period for a 5-0 Saints lead, but junior defenseman Ryan Branham spoiled Kevin Ackley’s shutout bid with a power-play shot from the point which deflected in off a skate for the Lakers at 7:22. Lorentz then completed the scoring with his second of the night at 15:10.
The six goals were the most in a game by the Saints this season, and they scored nine straight goals between the third period of the New Hampshire game last Saturday and the lone Lakers goal on Friday.
“It was nice to see us score some goals and score them early,” said SLU coach Joe Marsh. “I definitely think we were riding the emotional high of last weekend’s upset of UNH and scoring early just fed the fire.
“We can certainly understand what [LSSU coach] Frank [Anzalone] and his team are going through. We’ve had a couple of nights like that ourselves this year, and I am sure we’ll be in for a battle Saturday.”
