Providence scored just 14 seconds into the game and never looked back as it defeated St. Thomas, 5-1, in an exhibition game at Schneider Arena.
The Friars jumped out to a quick lead when senior Cody Loughlean chipped in a shot. Freshman Tony Zancanaro increased the Friar lead to 2-0 at the 5:11 mark as sophomore Jeff Mason assisted on the goal.
The Friars continued to pressure the Tommies and 2:44 later PC jumped ahead, 3-0, as freshman Colin McDonald scored in a scrum in front of the net.
Just 31 seconds later, senior Peter Zingoni gave the Friars a 4-0 cushion as he scored on the power play. PC outshot St. Thomas, 20-4, in the first period and 42-16 for the game.
Providence added one more goal as sophomore Nate Meyers pounced on a loose puck at the 4:09 mark of the second period.
The Tommies came out strong in the third period and at the 11:10 mark Thatcher Bell scored on the power play for their lone tally of the game. St. Thomas converted one of nine power-play chances, while the Friars went 1-for-12.
The Friars begin regular season action on Saturday, October 11, versus Sacred Heart at PC’s Schneider Arena at 7 p.m.
