Robert Morris earned its first win at the RMU Island Sports Center with a 3-1 win over Bentley College on Saturday night. Kurt Wright was named the first star as he scored the game-winning goal and had an empty net score to ice the game.
Christian Boucher had 29 saves in net to earn the win for the Colonials, who are now 2-3-0 on the year. Geordan Murphy had 32 saves in the loss, including 16 in the scoreless second period, for Bentley (1-3-2).
Robert Morris took the lead at 12:36 of the first period as Tom Biondich carried the puck out the right corner, in front of the net and found a hole between Geordan Murphy and the right post. Bill Menozzi dumped the puck into the corner where David Boguslawski won it and chipped it back to Biondich.
Wright added to the lead with his second goal of the season at 18:29, again with the help of Boguslawski. Boguslawski intercepted a Bentley outlet pass and flicked the puck ahead to Wright who squeezed the puck through Murphy’s five-hole from the bottom of the left circle.
The second period proved to be the first scoreless period of the season. Jeff Gilbert nearly made it a three-goal lead, but his slap-shot from the left point hit the right post and squirted under the goalie.
Bentley cut the lead in half 2:06 into the third period as Jake Plattner scored his first of the season when he took a Paul Markanian pass and put it through Boucher’s five-hole. Wright iced the game with 26 seconds left in regulation with an empty net score.
The Colonials continued to struggle with the man advantage, not scoring on five opportunities. Bentley failed to score in their five chances on the power play.
