The Nanooks skated to a 3-1 win over the Nebraska Omaha Mavericks keeping Alaska Fairbanks unbeaten at the Carlson Center against UNO.
The game was scoreless going into the second period, when the UAF Nanooks got one by UNO goalie Chris Holt when Adam Powell scored just as the second period was about to expire. With 39.7 seconds left Powell slammed the puck into UNO’s net from the left side after a nice feed, putting UAF up 1-0.
The Nanooks had help in incresing the lead when Kelly Czuy fired a shot from the blue line, putting the puck past Holt at 10:35 of the third period.
In the third period UNO scored at 10:46 on a shot by Bill Thomas from in front of the net, putting Omaha only one goal behind the Nanooks. However, Kyle Greentree gave the Nanooks cushion at 1:43 of the third to put the Nanooks in front 3-1.
The Nanooks held on to the 3-1 lead, putting UNO at a 3-2 record and UAF at 2-1 in CCHA play.
“I think we got some true warrior performances,” said Coach MacMillan “Wylie Rogers was amazing.”
“I’m not disappointed in the way we played,” said UNO head coach Mike Kemp. “We had tremendous opportunities in the 1st and in the first 8 minutes of the second period.”
The two teams meet again Saturday night at the Carlson Center in Fairbanks, Alaska at 7:05 p.m. AST.
