PRINCETON, N.J. — Emily Achterkirch scored the game-winning goal, and Molly Contini tallied two points as No. 8 Princeton defeated Union 4-2 on Senior Day at Hobey Baker Rink.
Eleven different Tigers players figured into the score sheet on Saturday afternoon, as Princeton wrapped up its last regular season home game of the season, outshooting the Dutchwomen 54-21.
Audrey Potts kicked off the game’s scoring with the only goal in the first period, as Karen MacDonald started the break in the defensive zone and Kieko DeClerck banked the puck off the boards to Potts, who sped along the right-side boards and into the right circle. She fired a bottle popper for her second goal of the year.
Princeton padded the lead twice in the second stanza, as Kelsey Koelzer one-timed a feed from behind the net set up by Morgan Sly and Cassidy Tucker, and Achterkirch blasted a shot from the right point set up by Jaimie McDonell and Contini.
Princeton’s final goal of the game came at 6:37 of the third, as Kimiko Marinacci tallied her third goal of the season. Hilary Lloyd and Contini won a puck battle along the boards and fed the puck cross-ice to Marinacci at the point, who fired top shelf to take a 4-0 lead.
The Dutchwomen started to mount a comeback in the third, as Kathryn Tomaselli scored her eighth of the year at the eight-minute mark on a feed from the neutral zone by Alli Devins. Jamie Smith scored 7:16 later on a rebound shot by Courtney Turner.
But the comeback fell short as the Dutchwomen were unable to beat Kimberly Newell again in the final 4:44 of regulation.
Newell improved to 17-5-2, stopping 19 of 21 shots in the win for Princeton. Melissa Black made 50 saves for Union.
After the game, Princeton was presented with the Ivy League championship trophy, and seniors Maddie Peake, McDonell, Karen MacDonald, Cristin Shanahan and Newell were presented with flowers in a celebration with family and friends.
Seniors dressing for Union were Courtney Turner, Elizabeth Otten, Jessica Kaminsky, Jamie Smith and Kathryn Tomaselli.
