Mercyhurst, coming off of a 6-3 win against AIC last week, skated to a 5-1 loss to Merrimack at Lawler Arena on Friday night. The penalty kill for Mercyhurst allowed three power-play goals from Merrimack in the game.
A five-on-three goal from Jonathan Kovacevic got things started in the first period. The period would end 2-0 in favor of the home team.
After an early power-play goal from Hampus Gustafsson in the second period to make it 3-0, Mercyhurst got on the board with a power-play goal of its own when Zach Todd scored from the top of the faceoff dots to cut the Merrimack lead to 3-1. Mercyhurst then skated to the locker room down 4-1.
A late power-play goal by Michael Babcock iced the game for Merrimack 5-1.
Mercyhurst was faced with a challenge with Drew Vogler in net for Merrimack, as he made 29 stops. This didn’t limit Mercyhurst from generating scoring opportunities, as mentioned by Merrimack coach Mark Dennehy.
“We scored five and they scored one but it didn’t feel like a 5-1 game; I think they could’ve had three or four goals…” said Dennehy.
Mercyhurst now sits with a 2-3 record and will play at New Hampshire tomorrow night.
