In a weekend that featured plenty of upsets and shockers, Michigan Tech may have pulled off the biggest.
One night at the Huskies knocked off 16th-ranked Union, they edged host and sixth-ranked Minnesota-Duluth, 4-3, to take home the title in the annual Ice Breaker tournament.
Tech fell behind 2-0 early on Bulldog goals by Riley Tufte and Nick Wolff . But penalties for Duluth proved to be a downfall.
Michigan Tech scored three straight power play goals to take a 3-2 lead in the second. Duluth tied things on a Scott Perunovich tally at 8:29 of the second. But less than two minutes later, Justin Misiak scored what proved to be the game-winner.
Minnesota-Duluth held a 36-17 advantage in shots and outshot Michigan Tech in every frame. But hopes of a comeback fell short when Dylan Samberg was assessed a major-game misconduct penalty for a hit to the head with 3:39 remaining.
The tournament championship is a great start to the coaching career for Joe Shawhan , who took over in the offseason for Mel Pearson .
Minnesota 2, Union 0
Highly-touted rookie Casey Mittelstadt notched his first collegiate goal and goaltender Eric Schierhorn stopped 26 shots to earn the shutout as Minnesota skated past Union, 2-0, in the consolation game of the Ice Breaker tournament.
Middelstadt’s goal opened the scoring at 3:43 of the middle frame before Rem Pitlick doubled the lead later in the frame at 10:09.
Pitlick finished with a game-high two-points, while Union’s Jake Kupsky finished with 34 saves. The Dutchmen now drop to 0-3 on the young season.
Atlantic Hockey
Army West Point 2, American International 1
Nick DeCenzo and Brendan Soucie tallied second-period goals for the Black Knights which, combined with Cole Burns 33 saves was good enough for a 2-1 victory.
AIC’s Janis Jake tallied the lone goal for the Yellow Jackets, one that tied the game near the midway point in the contest. Zackarias Skog stopped 19 shots in the loss for AIC.

Big Ten
Wisconsin 3, Ohio State 2
Wisconsin opened up a 3-0 lead through the game’s midpoint on goals by Will Johnson , Cameron Hughes and Tarek Baker , only to have Ohio State attempt a third-period rally.
Freddy Gerard and John Wiitala scored 24 seconds apart in the third to draw the Buckeyes within a goal but that’s as close as they would get. Kyle Hayton finished with 16 saves to earn the win.
The victory broke an eight-game home winless skid for Wisconsin (0-6-2) against Ohio State, the longest for the Badgers against any team in program history.
Notre Dame 4, Alabama-Huntsville 0
Two goals by Andrew Oglevie and markers by Jordan Gross and Matt Steeves accounted for all of the Notre Dame scoring while Dylan St. Cyr stopped all 34 shots he faced in his first career start for a 4-0 victory.
The victory completes the weekend sweep of the Chargers for Notre Dame.
ECAC
Clarkson 3, Michigan 0
The Golden Knights grabbed a 2-0 lead on goals by Dylan Gareau and Terrance Amorosa 67 seconds apart in the first period to guide Clarkson to a 3-0 victory of the visiting Wolverines.
Nic Pierog notched his first of the season at 11:40 of the second and Jake Kielly made 29 saves to earn the shutout. Combined with a 2-1 over Penn State on Friday, Clarkson begins its season 2-0-0 for the first time since 2015-16.
Penn State 4, St. Lawrence 1
The Nittany Lions recoved from a loss against cross-town Clarkson on Friday for a 4-1 victory at St. Lawrence on Saturday. Denis Smirnov notched a goal and two assists, while Liam Folkes finished the game with a goal and an assist.
Peyton Jones stopped 30 shots, including 14 in the third period, for the victory.
Merrimack 2, Colgate 2 (OT)
Merrimack jumped out to a 2-0 first period lead on goals by Derek Petti and Sami Tavernier . But Colgate’s Nick Austin single-handedly brought the Raiders back with goals at 9:49 and 17:33 of the second to a earn a 2-2 tie.
Both Drew Vogler and Colton Point finished the game with 28 saves, while Austin and John Snodgrass (two assists) each finished with multi-point games.
Hockey East
Connecticut 5, Maine 1
The Huskies jumped out to a 3-0 lead sparked by power play tallies from Alexander Payusov and Maxim Letunov en route to a 5-1 victory to earn the season-opening road split in Hockey East play.
Miles Gendron tallied three assist for UConn, while goaltender Adam Huska finished the game with 38 saves.
New Hampshire 3, UMass Lowell 1
For the second straight night, New Hampshire fell behind, 1-0, to #5 UMass Lowell. And for the second straight night rallied for the victory.
Liam Blackburn scored twice for the New Hampshire, which scored the final three goals of the game for the 3-1 final. Danny Tirone made 32 saves to help propel New Hampshire to the two-game sweep of the River Hawks.
Colorado College 4, Vermont 3
Vermont’s Ross Colton potted a hat trick for the hosts but that wasn’t enough as Colorado College grabbed leads of 2-1 and 4-2 before holding on for the 4-3 victory.
Trey Bradley broke a 2-2 tie at 8:52 of the third and Kade Kehoe added a goal, what turned out to be the game-winner just 24 seconds later.
Alex Leclerc stopped 35 shots, including 19 in the third period, in victory for the Tigers who salvaged a weekend split on the road.
Northeastern 7, Sacred Heart 0
Senior Dylan Sikura scored twice in the opening 9:31 to start an offensive explosion for Northeastern, earning a weekend sweep of Sacred Heart, 7-0.
Rookie Zach Solow followed a four-point (one goal, three assists) effort on Friday with two additional goals on Saturday, while fellow freshman Cayden Primeau earned a shutout in his first career shutout.
The game featured a combined 84 penalty minutes including four major penalties, three game misconducts and a game disqualification.
NCHC
Providence 3, Miami 2
The Friars had a flair for the dramatic on Saturday as Kasper Bjorkqvist buried a rebound with 0.9 seconds remaining to lift Providence to a 3-2 win to complete the weekend sweep.
The victory spoiled a two-goal comeback for Miami after the Friars jumped to the lead with power play goals 26 seconds apart in the first.
Grant Hutton got the RedHawks on the board at 13:03 of the second before Casey Gilling evened the score with 13:31 remaining.
That only set up the late-game drama as Providence improved to 2-0-0 on the young season.
WCHA
Ferris State 3, Western Michigan 2
Andrew Dorantes and Mitch Maloney staked the Bulldogs to a 2-0 lead as Ferris State outlasted Western Michigan, 3-2, to earn a series split of the home-and-home series between former CCHA foes.
After falling at home on Friday, 6-1, Ferris State earned the road victory behind a 37-save effort from goaltender Darren Smith.
Ethen Frank and Cold Conrad tallied the goals for the Broncos.
Northern Michigan 4, Lake Superior 1
Goals by Robbie Payne in the first and Philip Beaulieu in the second pushed Northern Michigan to a 2-0 lead it would never relinquish, earning a 4-1 victory in a non-conference game between WCHA teams.
After Jake Hand pulled the Lakers within a goal at 4:15 of the third, Denver Pierce and Payne added late insurance markers. They two clubs split the weekend series out of conference and won’t see one another in conference play until mid-January.
St. Cloud State 4, Minnesota State 0
On a night of shutouts, St. Cloud State followed suit, blanking Minnesota State, 4-0.
Jeff Smith made 42 saves, while four different goal scorers tallied paced by Jimmy Schuldt’s goal and assist. The shutout is the second of Smith’s collegiate career, having posted one against Northeastern in 2014 while playing for UMass Lowell.
Air Force 1, Alaska 1
Dan Bailey’s goal at 3:32 of the third period pulled Air Force even with host Alaska in a 1-1 tie.
Neither team struck in a 5-on-5 overtime. Alaska scored during a 3-on-3 overtime, something that will be used this season in WCHA league play. Officially, though, the game will be recorded as a tie for NCAA purposes.
Justin Woods scored the lone goal for the host Nanooks.
North Dakota 3, Alaska-Anchorage 2
For the second straight night, the host Seawolves game nationally-ranked North Dakota everything it could handle, but on Saturday it simply wasn’t enough.
One night after a 1-1 tie, North Dakota’s Casey Johnson’s goal at 1:21 of overtime was enough for the Fighting Hawks to edge Anchorage, 3-2.
Nicolas Erb-Ekholm tallied with 8:37 remaining in regulation for the Seawolves to force the extra session.
Independents
Massachusetts 4, Arizona State 2
John Leonard’s goal midway through the third period broke a 2-2 tie to give the Minutemen the win and a split of the weekend series in Tempe, Az.
UMass never trailed in the game, jumping to a 1-0 lead on a Jake Gaudet goal in the first and a 2-1 advantage courtest of a Griff Jeszka goal at the 7:59 mark of the second.
But the Sun Devils continuously battled back, and Anthony Croston’s goal at 12:06 of the second tied the game until Leonard’s goal on the rush in the third. Niko Rufo’s empty-net goal in the final minute sealed the victory.
