Wisconsin-Stevens Point came out strong in the first period and didn’t let up, taking the first game of its interleague weekend series with Concordia-Moorhead by the score of 3-1.

The first half of the first period was all Stevens Point, though it would take 12:19 for the Pointers to get on the scoreboard. On their first power play, the Pointers strung three beautiful passes together, with the final to Ryan Maxson on the back door to stake out a 1-0 lead.

The second Pointer goal also came on the power play, but this time defenseman Randy Enders pick up a loose puck in the slot and fired it past Cobber goaltender Bryan Howard to increase the lead. The Cobbers, who were unable to get a shot on goal until the 9:49 mark, finally got on the board as Andy Vix beat a Pointer defenseman one-on-one with just :53 left in the first.

The second period saw no scoring, but still plenty of action for both teams, but the third period’s lone goal belonged to Stevens Point again. After a long scramble in front, the puck squirted to the face off dot to the right of Howard where Bryan Fricke was ready and waiting. Fricke held the puck, waiting for Howard to make his move, and when he did, Fricke fired it past him for the final goal.

Stevens Point, after clicking on its first two power plays, ended the evening 2-for-6. The Pointer penalty kill was stifling, holding the Cobbers shotless on their first two power-play attempts, and keeping the Cobbers off the scoreboard in four attempts total.

Pointer goaltender Bob Gould ended with 13 saves while Cobber goalie Howard finished with 19.
