The Devner Pioneers shutout the Northeastern Huskies and skated away with the Nye Frontier Classic Tournament title with a 3-0 win.

The Pioneers scored on a power-play and two breakaways for the victory. Denver also defeated Boston College on Friday 4-3 to win the Classic championship.

After a scoreless defensive-minded first period (nine total shots), the Pioneers struck twice in the second period. The first goal came on the power-play and was scored by Matt Weber at 6:26. It was Weber’s second goal of the Classic. DU added its second goal when Kevin Doell fed a streaking Greg Keith who skated in alone on NU goalie Jason Braun and scored his first goal of the season.

Denver added to its lead at 4:41 of the third. This time it was Doell on the breakaway scoring DU’s third goal of the game.

The Huskies had an opportunity to get back into the game. With two Pioneers in the penalty box, NU pulled Braun for the 6×3 advantage for 1:16. But despite several quality chances, the Huskies could not crack Pioneer goalie Adam Berkhoel (24 saves). Braun made 26 saves for the Huskies.

The Huskies fall to 0-2 for the first time since the 1990-91 team began 0-5-1. Northeastern next plays on Friday Oct. 19 in the home opener versus Mercyhurst. Denver will host the US National Under-18 Team next Saturday.
