Boston University senior John Sabo was arraigned Monday on charges that he assaulted a fellow BU student outside a nightclub on Boston’s Commonwealth Avenue last September.

The forward, with 10 goals and 12 assists this season, continues to play for the Terriers. The school investigated the incident last fall, and determined that no internal discipline was necessary against either student.

Sabo, from Harding Township, N.J., will have a pretrial hearing on April 8. He is charged with assault and battery, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and making threats against Christopher Boccuzzi, a senior from West Roxbury, Mass.

Sabo pressed similar charged against Boccuzzi, but they were thrown out in a separate hearing when a court clerk found no probable cause.

“Obviously I was troubled by this,” said David Eisenstadt, Sabo’s attorney, to the Boston Herald. “People have to call it like they see it. But I don’t litigate these things in the press.”

Said Boccuzzi’s attorney, Phil Tracy, also to the Herald: “The court system is working. … Let’s be realistic. [Boccuzzi] had his eye almost blasted out of his head. He had his jaw broken. It may have to be rebroken, rewired. He’s got mesh holding the eye in. He suffered greatly.”

Sabo got into an altercation with Boccuzzi on Sept. 24, 2002, outside The Avenue nightclub. According to his family, Boccuzzi had surgery twice — with one procedure lasting eight hours — to correct problems stemming from the alleged attack.

Sabo was released on personal recognizance following his arraignment, though he’s under a “stay-away” order.

Boston University senior John Sabo was arraigned Monday on charges that he assaulted a fellow BU student outside a nightclub on Boston’s Commonwealth Avenue last September.
