Denver sophomore forward Drew Shore will return for his junior season and not sign with the Florida Panthers, the school announced Thursday.

Shore was drafted in the second round (44th overall) by Florida in the 2009 NHL draft.

“I’m really excited to return to DU for my junior season,” Shore said in a DU press release. “I love everything about Denver – my teammates, school, coaches and, of course, my family. I grew up in Denver watching the Pioneers win national championships and that remains the goal. I’m excited about our team next season and another year playing with my brother, Nick. I couldn’t be more sure that it was best to continue my development at DU and the NHL can wait for at least one more year.”

“We obviously are pleased that Drew has decided to return for his junior year,” added Denver coach George Gwozdecky. “Drew had a breakout year and will take another major step in his development as a Pioneer next season. He also will be one year closer to earning his degree, which is important to him and his family. Drew will be a major factor in the success of our team next year.”

Shore tallied 19 points on five goals and 14 assists as a freshman in 2009-10 before adding 23 goals and 23 assists this past year where he was also the MVP of the Denver Cup.
