{"id":36928,"date":"2011-04-10T20:33:09","date_gmt":"2011-04-11T01:33:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.uscho.com\/?p=36928"},"modified":"2011-04-11T10:51:50","modified_gmt":"2011-04-11T15:51:50","slug":"minnesota-duluths-schmidt-earns-unsung-hero-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uscho.com\/2011\/04\/10\/minnesota-duluths-schmidt-earns-unsung-hero-award\/","title":{"rendered":"Minnesota-Duluth&#8217;s Schmidt earns Unsung Hero Award"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Minnesota-Duluth&#8217;s Kyle Schmidt has been named the 2011 winner of the Derek Hines Unsung Hero Award.<\/p>\n<p>The award was given Friday, the day before Schmidt scored the overtime winner for the Bulldogs in the national championship game.<\/p>\n<p>Schmidt, a senior forward, is the fifth winner of the award, named for the former Army player who was killed in the line of duty in Afghanistan in September 2005.<\/p>\n<p>Merrimack senior forward Chris Barton, Rensselaer senior defenseman John Kennedy, Alaska senior defenseman Bryant Molle and Niagara senior forward David Ross were also nominated by their conferences.<\/p>\n<p>Schmidt finished his senior season with 11 goals and 22 points after scoring in both games of the Frozen Four.<\/p>\n<p>Off the ice, he has volunteered at youth hockey practices and by reading to students at elementary schools.
