St. Lawrence sophomore defenseman Nelson Armstrong has left school to play for his hometown Peterborough Petes of the Ontario Hockey League.

The 19-year-old had one goal and eight points in 44 career games with the Saints.

“I am excited to join the Peterborough Petes organization and be part of the team,” Armstrong said in a Petes’ press release. “I look forward to playing for the coaches and being a leader.”

“Nelson Armstrong indicated that after long consideration, he would be better suited playing in a different hockey environment,” St. Lawrence coach Greg Carvel told USCHO via email. “He came to St. Lawrence as a true freshman and although there were high expectations for him, he struggled as a player for his entire year-and-a-half with the program. I respect his decision and I truly enjoyed working with Nelson. He is a good young man who just felt like this wasn’t the right place for him. He worked hard and was very coachable, but he wasn’t happy with his status on the team.

“This opens up a scholarship position on our back end that my staff and I look forward to filling with a student-athlete who wants to be part of a strong hockey program that is on the rise.”

Armstrong is the fourth NCAA player in two weeks to leave school for the OHL, following Nebraska-Omaha goalie Anthony Stolarz and Denver defenseman Dakota Mermis to the London Knights and Michigan forward Daniel Milne to the Owen Sound Attack.

St. Lawrence sophomore defenseman Nelson Armstrong has left school to play for his hometown Peterborough Petes of the Ontario Hockey League.
