After first being reported by the Daily Gazette, Union junior goalie Troy Grosenick has given up his senior season with the Dutchmen to sign a free-agent deal with the San Jose Sharks.

“We’re happy for Troy,” Union coach Rick Bennett said in the Gazette. “It’s more gratifying to know that he’s going to finish his degree. He’s one of the best student-athletes at Union College hockey. Finishing his degree, outside of hockey, is something invaluable.”

“We think that Troy is a quality goaltender and we are excited to bring him into the fold,” said San Jose GM Doug Wilson in a news release. “He has excelled the past couple seasons at Union playing for coach Rick Bennett and his staff and we feel he can be a valuable member of our organization.”

Grosenick, a Hobey Baker finalist in 2012, went 17-10-5 with a 2.12 goals-against average, a .926 save percentage and two shutouts in 2012-13.
