Atlantic Hockey has issued suspensions to Niagara sophomore defenseman Tyler Hayes and Canisius junior defenseman Alex Jaeckle following last weekend’s league series between the two teams.

Hayes was whistled for a five-minute major for spearing and given a game disqualification at the 17:33 mark of the third period last Saturday. The game disqualification penalty carries an automatic one-game suspension, however, through the league’s supplemental discipline policy, Atlantic Hockey is adding an additional game to Hayes’ suspension.

He will be unable to play for Niagara when the Purple Eagles play at Ohio State Dec. 29-30.

Jaeckle’s suspension comes after an interference penalty he received in the second period of Saturday’s contest against Niagara. Jaeckle was given a two-minute minor for interference, but the play was put under review following the game. It was determined that Jaeckle not only hit a Niagara player who did not have the puck, but he also made contact to the player’s head when doing so.

The act was deemed “egregious,” according to a league press release, and Atlantic Hockey officials determined a one-game suspension was sufficient.

Jaeckle will be unavailable for Canisius when the Golden Griffins travel to play Cornell on Saturday, Dec. 30.
