A late goal from Minnesota Duluth defenseman Dylan Samburg broke a 2-2 tie and gave the No. 3 Bulldogs a come-from-behind 3-2 win over No. 1 Notre Dame in the rematch of last year’s national title game.

The two teams will face-off again on Saturday evening in the non-league series finale.

Notre Dame jumped to a 2-1 lead on second period tallies by Andrew Peeke and Colin Thiesen, that after Duluth opened the scoring early in the frame on a goal by Peter Mackay.

But a Nick Swaney shorthanded goal with 7:23 remaining set up the late game situation.

After Notre Dame’s power play was unable to score late, the Bulldogs transitioned and earned an offensive zone faceoff. Swaney and Peter Krieger worked to win the draw back to Samburg who wrested a puck through significant traffic into the net.

It is the second consecutive Friday where a newly-crowned No. 1-ranked team fell. Ohio State fell last Friday, 6-3, to Massachusetts before earning the split on Saturday.

Sparked by a hat trick by Max Johnson, goals number 4, 5 and 6, on the young season, No. 15 Bowling Green cruised past Ohio State, 8-2.

The Falcons opened a 7-0 lead through two periods before the Buckeyes struck twice in the final frame. Stephen Ballis’ shorthanded tally with 8:23 remaining closed the scoring.

Bowling Green was an impressive 4-for-8 on the power play while limiting the Buckeyes to just a single power play goal in eight chances of their own.

Rensselaer 5, No. 11 Union 3

Prior to the beginning of this rivalry weekend, multiple people said you throw out the records and rankings when RPI and Union meet. We now know why.

Paces by four straight goals between the beginning of the second and early in the third to overcome a 4-2 deficit. Then after Union’s Jack Adams drew the Dutchmen close, Ture Linden buried an empty-netter in the final minute of play to ensure the 5-3 win for the Engineers.
