Arizona State sophomore defenseman Jacob Wilson has been issued a two-game suspension by the WCHA.

The suspension is a result of Wilson’s five-minute major and game disqualification penalty for contact to the head on March 2 at Minnesota.

In addition to his automatic one-game suspension for the disqualification, the WCHA, who oversees supplemental discipline for the independent Sun Devils, assigned an additional one-game suspension.

“The whole situation is unfortunate,” said ASU coach Greg Powers in a statement. “Jacob is a clean hockey player and plays the game the right way. This won’t define him and his reputation. We’re certainly sorry for this happening and will work to ensure that our players are educated on situations like these to prevent further incidents.”

Wilson will serve his two-game suspension over the team’s next two games, which will include the Sun Devils’ first-ever NCAA tournament game.

“As someone who always respects the game and plays the right way, that one instance does not represent the way myself or my team plays the game,” added Wilson. “Anyone that knows me knows I’m not a dirty player. I would never intentionally try hurt anyone, especially a former teammate. It’s a fast game and mistakes are made and I’m now paying for that mistake. I look forward to returning to the ice with my team.”
